Staff Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira

January 22, 1978 – October 19, 2011
United States Army / New Jersey Army National Guard
Essex County Sheriff’s Office

Army Staff Sgt. Jorge Miguel Oliveira lived a life defined by service, courage, and an unwavering commitment to others. Born in Cantanhede, Portugal, and raised in Newark’s Ironbound section, Staff Sgt. Oliveira represented the very best of the American story — a life built on family, duty, sacrifice, and love of country.

He graduated from East Side High School in Newark and went on to serve three years on active duty in the United States Army before joining the New Jersey Army National Guard in 2003. His service would take him far from home, but his purpose remained the same: to protect, to lead, and to stand beside those who needed him.

Staff Sgt. Oliveira served in some of the most demanding places and moments of his generation. His record included service at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a response mission following Hurricane Katrina, a combat tour in Iraq, and finally, service in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. By the time he deployed to Afghanistan, he was recognized as one of the most experienced and respected noncommissioned officers in his unit.

On October 19, 2011, Staff Sgt. Oliveira was serving in Yahya Khel, Paktika Province, Afghanistan, with the 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry Regiment, 50th Brigade Combat Team.  While conducting a route reconnaissance mission, his unit was attacked by insurgents using an improvised explosive device. Staff Sgt. Oliveira gave his life while serving his country and protecting others.

His sacrifice was not only that of a soldier, but also that of a public servant. At home, Jorge Oliveira served with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked as a member of the SWAT team, warrant squad, and fugitive squad. Whether in uniform overseas or serving the people of New Jersey, he answered the call with honor.

For his service, Staff Sgt. Oliveira received numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart Medal, both awarded posthumously. These honors reflect not only the danger he faced, but the courage, professionalism, and devotion he carried throughout his military career.

New Jersey mourned him as a son, a brother, a soldier, a sheriff’s officer, and a hero. Flags were flown at half-staff in his honor, and hundreds gathered at Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart to pay their respects. His legacy continues at Essex County Veterans Memorial Park, where Staff Sgt. Jorge Oliveira Plaza stands as a lasting tribute to his life and sacrifice.

Staff Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira’s story is one of pride, service, and selflessness. He gave everything in defense of his country, his fellow soldiers, and the values we hold dear. His name deserves to be remembered not only for how he died, but for how he lived,  with courage, loyalty, humility, and purpose.

We honor Staff Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira. We remember his sacrifice. We thank him for his service. May his legacy live on forever.
