United States Army Ranger
Heavy Construction Professional
My father, Richard Allen Barton Sr., was a proud United States Army Ranger, a devoted husband, a loving father, a faithful Christian, and a man whose life was defined by service, integrity, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his family.
To the world, he was known as a respected professional in the heavy construction industry, specializing in concrete formwork.
His reputation was built on honesty, determination, and an incredible work ethic. Even during difficult economic times, he never stopped moving forward. When life demanded that he begin again, he simply rolled up his sleeves, went back to work, and built something even better.
He never complained.
He simply did what needed to be done.
But to me...
He was probably the hardest-working man I've ever known, and he is, to this day, my Hero.
The discipline he learned as an Army Ranger never left him. It wasn't something he talked about every day—it was something he lived every day.
He taught me that your word matters.
That hard work is never optional.
That your family always comes first.
That leadership is earned through actions, not titles.
Those lessons shaped the man I became, both in uniform and long after I hung it up.
After serving nearly thirty-five years in the United States military, I realized something that my father had understood all along...
Service doesn't end when the uniform comes off.
That simple belief became the foundation of Operation: The Shepherd's Watch.
Operation: The Shepherd's Watch officially began on February 28, 2026. That date was not chosen because it was convenient or easy to remember—it was chosen because it was my father's birthday.
Our mission is to continue standing beside those who continue serving others—veterans navigating civilian life, first responders answering difficult calls, Military Working Dogs who served faithfully beside our troops, and communities facing the devastation of natural disasters.
Every event we organize...
Every fundraiser we hold...
Every family we help...
Every veteran we stand beside...
...is another opportunity to continue the example my father set for me decades ago.
He believed that faith should be lived.
That leadership required sacrifice.
That helping others wasn't something you scheduled—it was simply what you did.
He served his church faithfully.
He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
He invested in his community.
Most importantly, he invested in his family.
When he passed away on July 17, 2016, I lost my father.
I lost my mentor.
I lost the man whose example had guided every major decision of my life.
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't wish I could ask his advice one more time.
Yet somehow, he still leads me.
Every decision I make for Operation: The Shepherd's Watch is filtered through one simple question:
"Would this make Dad proud?"
If the answer is yes...
Then I know I'm on the right path.
The values that define Operation: The Shepherd's Watch—
Faith. Service. Vigilance. Brotherhood.
—did not begin with me.
They began with him.
This organization exists because one man quietly demonstrated what those words look like when they are lived instead of spoken.
Although he is no longer standing beside us...
His example continues to stand watch over everything we do.
This organization is respectfully dedicated to the memory of my father...
Richard Allen Barton Sr.
A Soldier.
A Ranger.
A Husband.
A Father.
My Hero.
"Some Never Stop Standing Watch."
"Operation: The Shepherd's Watch was founded in loving memory of Richard Allen Barton Sr., whose life of faith, service, and quiet leadership continues to inspire every mission we undertake."
